We source our meat from people we trust. That means working with companies and farmers that are dedicated to doing the right thing—never cutting corners, and always looking for ways to improve. Our partners' operating methods are inspired by Dr. Temple Grandin, a member of the Humane Farm Animal Care Program's scientific committee. Their facilities are routinely inspected and approved by the USDA or a comparable agency.
Our standard is to work with farmers who raise hogs that are not subjected to farrowing and gestation stalls, i.e., open pen. Gestation stalls enclose sows during pregnancy, and farrowing stalls pen sows in while nursing piglets.
Conventionally farmed hogs typically have slatted floors in their environments—proven to increase leg problems for pigs. ButcherBox hogs are raised on farms with nearly all solid floors and hay and straw bedding.
Many of our pork products are sourced from hogs with heritage-breed lineage. These breeds include (but are not limited to) Duroc, Berkshire, and Chester White. Their natural, “old-world” genetics mean that during their slow maturation process, they develop the fine marbling and great flavor that mother nature intended them to have.
Our hogs are fed an all-vegetarian diet (with the exception of milk proteins) and are raised with traditional, sustainable farming methods.
